About the Course

The WoMB (Women-Mother-Baby) Clinic is a free women’s and maternal health occupational therapy clinic serving the members of Union, Anson, Mecklenburg, and surrounding counties in southeastern North Carolina. Offering services including lactation counseling and infant feeding support, pelvic floor therapy, evaluation and support of infant development, peri- and postnatal mental health support, and more, WoMB is affiliated with the Wingate University Doctor of Occupational Therapy (WUOTD) program in the town of Wingate, NC. The WoMB Clinic was founded by Drs. Patee Tomsic, Stacey Caplan, Reeti Douglas, and Wynnet Sinclair, four WUOTD faculty members with nearly 80 years of combined clinical experience in the areas of pelvic health, infant-mother dyads, and infant and child development. The faculty received a $10,000 grant in June 2024 to support the foundation and establishment of the clinic. Early efforts in program planning, design, and development were driven with the faculty with the support of two dedicated WUOTD Capstone students. In Spring 2025, The WoMB Clinic, its supporting faculty, and its dedicated students began serving the women and mothers of the surrounding community. In Summer 2025, Drs. Patee Tomsic and Reeti Douglas passed the didactic and practical examinations required to become Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC). Learning Objectives: 1. Describe occupational therapy’s distinct role in providing comprehensive maternal health care before, during, and after pregnancy. 2. Describe the steps involved in developing a free women’s and maternal health occupational therapy clinic in collaboration with available community partners. 3. Evaluate effective marketing strategies for promoting free women's and maternal health occupational therapy services to underserved populations through community partnerships. 4. Recognize the value in providing opportunities to expose occupational therapy students to early experiences with the emerging practice area of women’s and maternal health.
